Understanding the China-Brazil Dynamics
In 2013, Professor Gao moved to Shanghai to research cultural interactions among BRICS nations. Later, he pursued the Senior Visiting Student Program here at Peking University. His efforts have significantly enhanced bilateral understanding and cross-cultural dialogue between Brazil and China.
Professor Evandro highlights the multifaceted and evolving relationship between China and Brazil. As the world’s second-largest economy, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, and a nation with a rich cultural heritage, China plays a crucial role globally. He notes that understanding China provides valuable insights into global power dynamics while criticizing the Western-centric perspectives that often dominate Brazilian academic discourse. He encourages students to adopt a broader view of international cultures, particularly focusing on China.
Brazil, on the other hand, is the largest country in South America by both population and territory. And it has developed a strategic partnership with China including trade, diplomatic cooperation, and joint initiatives in global governance, over the past decade. In 2022, China became Brazil’s second-largest trade partner reaching $157 billion. Nonetheless, Professor Evandro underscores the need for Brazil to diversify its exports and foster collaborations with China in technology, healthcare, and innovation, positioning itself to move beyond historical reliance on commodity exports.
China’s Role in Global Collaboration
The world is currently experiencing substantial volatility, characterized by shifting power dynamics and challenges to multilateralism. Professor Evandro notes that China’s diplomatic approach—focused on stability, multilateral cooperation, and adherence to international norms—contrasts sharply with the confrontational strategies of certain Western nations. China’s global initiatives have positively influenced developing countries, establishing it as a stabilizing force in a fragmented international landscape.
Take the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) for an example, it demonstrates China’s ambition to play a central role in global development. Professor Evandro views the BRI as a cornerstone of modern Chinese foreign policy, reflecting a proactive international presence. Although Brazil has not formally joined the BRI, the professor suggests that Brazil could consider partial participation in it, particularly through initiatives like the Health Silk Road or a Portuguese-language Silk Road.
On the other hand, the recent expansion of BRICS emphasizes its growing influence. It advocates the restructuring of global institutions like the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund to more accurately reflect a multipolar world. Brazil’s active engagement in BRICS provides a valuable opportunity to align its interests with those of other Global South countries and tackle common challenges together.
Upon finishing the three-year academic journey in Shanghai, he gained experience that was both refreshing and challenging. Yet, these hurdles, like language barriers, dietary differences, and a new pace of life, all deepened his appreciation for China’s rich culture. He felt that:
Many Brazilians’ impression of China is ancient, focusing on traditional symbols like ancient arts and Confucianism, often overlooking the achievements of its modernization. Over the past decade, Gao Wenyong has dedicated himself to fostering cultural and academic exchanges between China and Brazil. Cross-cultural learning is vital for deepening China-Brazil relations, he concluded and teaches his students that understanding different cultures involves listening and dialogue, discovering the resonance that binds them. Furthermore, Professor Evandro emphasizes the importance of promoting contemporary Chinese culture—modern music, visual arts, and cinema—to foster a more nuanced understanding and encourage both countries to move beyond stereotypes and embrace each other’s dynamic cultural landscapes.
